Pakistani fighter jets have bombed Taliban hideouts in the country's northwestern tribal region, killing nearly 60 militants, Pakistani media said on Friday.
The jets carried out two attacks on Thursday targeting a training centre run by the Taliban and a madrasa or Islamic seminary in the Mamuzai area of the Upper Orakzai Agency, a major Taliban stronghold.
A senior military official, who requested anonymity, said that the jets had destroyed seven Taliban hideouts.
Another official said all the militants were from the Tehreek-e-Taliban group, an umbrella Taliban organization in Pakistan.
Violence surged in the country in 2009, with Taliban militants staging regular attacks on provincial government officials, police and civilians and planting roadside devices as part of its fight against U.S. and NATO troops.
